With the warmer weather arriving across the Mid North Coast, ants are starting to become more active around homes and businesses.

You might notice a few ants around the kitchen, along a window sill, outside near the patio or travelling in a line along the side of the house.

The first reaction is usually to grab a can of insect spray and kill the ants you can see.

That might give you a quick knockdown — but it doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.

Where are the ants coming from?

The ants you see walking around your home are generally only a small part of what’s happening.

They may be travelling from a nest outside, entering through small gaps and cracks, or following established trails looking for food and water.

That’s why simply spraying the visible ants can sometimes turn into a frustrating cycle:

Spray them today. They’re gone. A few days later, they’re back again.

Finding where they’re coming from and choosing the right treatment for the situation can make a big difference.

Different ant problems can need different treatments

Not every ant problem should be treated exactly the same way.

Depending on the species, where they’re nesting and where they’re travelling, treatment may involve targeted sprays, non-repellent products or ant baits designed to be carried back towards the colony.

That’s also why I don’t believe in simply turning up, spraying everything and leaving.

A good pest treatment starts with having a proper look at what’s actually happening.

A few things you can do around your home

There are some simple steps that can help reduce ant activity:

• Clean up food crumbs and spills, particularly around kitchens and pet feeding areas.
• Keep food stored in sealed containers.
• Don’t leave pet food sitting out unnecessarily.
• Repair obvious gaps around doors, windows and other entry points where possible.
• Keep vegetation and garden growth from constantly touching the house.
• Watch where the ants are travelling before reaching for the spray — their trail can help identify where they’re coming from.

If the ants keep returning despite what you’re doing, it may be time to look at treating the source rather than just the ants you can see.
