Why Winter Is a Good Time to Get on Top of Pest Problems
Winter might be quieter for some pests, but that doesn’t mean they’ve disappeared.
Across Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast, cooler weather can push rats, mice, cockroaches and other pests towards homes, sheds and businesses looking for food, water and shelter.
Getting on top of a pest problem now can also help prevent a small issue becoming a much bigger one as the weather warms up.
Pests Don’t Take Winter Off
During the colder months, pest activity can sometimes be less noticeable. That can make it easy to assume there isn’t a problem.
However, pests may simply be hiding in areas such as:
- Roof voids and wall cavities
- Garages and sheds
- Kitchens and cupboards
- Around hot water systems
- Under and around buildings
- Storage areas
- Other warm, protected spaces
Rats and mice in particular can cause problems once they find somewhere comfortable to shelter. Apart from contamination, rodents can also damage stored items and chew electrical wiring.
What Happens When Spring Arrives?
As temperatures begin to rise, pest activity generally increases.
Spiders, cockroaches, ants and other insects become more active, while warmer conditions can provide ideal opportunities for populations to grow.
That’s why dealing with existing pest problems before spring can make sense rather than waiting until pests become obvious.
Look for the Early Warning Signs
You don’t always have to see the pest itself to know something is happening.
Keep an eye out for droppings, scratching noises in walls or ceilings, damaged food packaging, unusual smells, cobwebs, cockroach activity or an increase in insects around your home.
Finding the cause of the problem is just as important as treating what you can see.
